THE BEST MOVIE EVER (CONT'D FROM BAMBOO KILLERS)

OK, totally misleading title, because I am by no means telling you that this is it. It's an impossible proposition. Whatever you say is automatically wrong, no matter what it is.

This is part of a little mini-meme Emily and I cooked up the other day after we went to see the likes of Jane Espenson and Amy Berg being awesome. We were talking about what the boredom-disc is for each of us. The movie that gets thrown in the player when something needs to be thrown in the player. You know the one. The one you can watch and watch and watch and never get tired of. The one you can have on all the damn time, as background or in paying full rapt attention.

To be perfectly honest, I'm more likely to go for a TV disc at any given time, but there are a couple of flicks that do get that dubious honor. One above all.

In her post, you'll see the laundry list of things that she just loves in a movie. Sort of an equation, if you will. And you get her answer. And we find that those things are reflective of the things you find in her writing and that which she likes most to write about.

I find the same reflection in my equation.
mindfucks + violence + social breakdown + delusional goals + a little out-of-the-box terrorism + random weird, but actual facts= Fight Club
Your turn.

One movie that I can watch again and again, not so much for its technical quality or greatness, but for the fact it's just a great movie is EQUILIBRIUM.

Tortured character, oppressive Big Brother future, and...

COPIOUS - NAY, OBSCENE - AMOUNTS OF GUN PORN.

I'm not always that easy, but this movie is one of those unpolished gems you discover at the bottom of the creek, shimmering slightly in the muck.

I love Equilibrium. My ex brought it over and kept apologizing for how much it sucked even though he loved it and I told him to shut up because it was awesome.

Yeah, some days you just have to sit back, unholster and watch obscene amounts of gun porn.

and the fact it has sword porn in it as well doesn't hurt.

Not one bit.

My equation involves dark humor with violence, good music, and a little bit of tenderness.

Grosse Pointe Blank

Firefly episode "Out of Gas"

or

Farscape episode "Through the Looking Glass"

playing with color on needy spaceships is fun

I couldn't do this. I tried. I really did. But it was a big NO GO. I also normally turn to TV these last few years. But movies -- I couldn't narrow down a list to less than four. And the one I would pick by default (the one I watch most often), well, it isn't something I watch because it's close to the elements of my own writing style.

So I was stymied. Stymied big time. Why do I find that frustrating?

With that caveat in place, Adam, what be yon flick?

M*A*S*H. I love that movie. The snarky tone, the devastation, irony and comraderie in the face of absurdity and hopelessness. Sex, stubborn humor, a melding of disgust and revelry. I think it's a great example of what Tom Robbins called cheerful cynicism. Finest kind.

I think mine is probably Deep Blue Sea. The more I watch it, the more it's the smaller things I love... like when the smart sharks are using Stellan Skarsgard's strapped-to-a-stretcher body to ram through the lab's window, and the look on Stellan's face as he's being rammed is like "...sorry".

Weird, I don't write anything remotely in the vein of Deep Blue Sea!

My genre-appropriate choice would be Galaxy Quest. High concept + fantastic character arcs + the best runners and payoffs ever = what I aspire to.

Serenity will work too. My Firefly episode would be "War Stories".
